Event Horizon was my second time working for Neil Corbould, following a shorter three-or-four-week stint with him on The Fifth Element. I haven’t given The Fifth Element its own tile simply because I wasn’t on it for very long, but it was a great film to have been part of and another production packed with practical effects.

Event Horizon was something else entirely — a dark, atmospheric sci-fi horror starring Sam Neill, Laurence Fishburne, Joely Richardson, Sean Pertwee, Jason Isaacs and Kathleen Quinlan. At the time it was one of the most intense and creatively demanding films I had worked on.

There was an enormous amount for the Special Effects department to get involved with: mechanical effects, destruction, gore, atmosphere and some extraordinary practical rigs, including some brilliantly inventive work designed by Dave Brighton, who really was a genius when it came to this kind of engineering.

And then there were the blood sequences. I spent two full days throwing blood over naked men and women while filming some of the horrific imagery associated with the ship’s previous crew. Even by film-set standards, it was fairly surreal — and certainly not something you forget in a hurry.
