A monumental historical epic directed by Ridley Scott, starring Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen, Richard Harris, and the unforgettable Oliver Reed. I had the honour of sharing a drink with Ollie the week before he passed, some of the scenes i witnessed him acting in made my hair stand on end — a true gentleman, full of charisma, warmth and that same aura as Connery.
Working on the opening Germania battle sequence, which was one of the most physically demanding effects sequences I’ve ever been part of. We rigged hidden liquid propane installations, flamethrowers disguised as Roman artillery, coordinated fireballs, practical arrow hits and amputations— all timed to camera and performance. It was intense, cold, muddy, and brilliant. That battlefield felt alive. I could go on for hours talking about the fun we had making this movie and the places it took me to.
