Defiance was another project with Neil Corbould, this time taking us out to Lithuania for a tough World War II drama directed by Edward Zwick and starring Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber and Jamie Bell.

The locations were perfect for the film, but they made the work hard. We spent long days out in the forests in bitterly cold conditions, dealing with mud, difficult access and demanding battle sequences.

Our work covered the practical battlefield effects — gunfire, impacts, explosions, smoke, fire and environmental effects — all designed to make the fighting feel grounded and authentic.

One of my favourite memories actually came after filming. I ended up driving one of the horsebox trailers loaded with equipment all the way back from Lithuania to the UK, crossing through Eastern Europe on the journey home. I loved that drive. After such a tough shoot, it was a completely different way to finish the job and one of those unexpected experiences that has stayed with me.

I remember Defiance mainly as a hard job in a hard environment — long hours, freezing conditions and physically demanding work — but also as another strong production with Neil and a film that benefited from shooting in those real, unforgiving locations.
