After helping George Jaques with his short film Cracked, it was really satisfying to see him come back a little later with something considerably more ambitious — his first feature film, Black Dog.

George had already impressed me with the determination he had shown getting his earlier work made, so when he asked if we could help again, I was very happy to support him.

Black Dog was still being made on a relatively modest scale compared with the studio features I normally work on, but that was part of its charm. It was a young filmmaker making his first feature, surrounded by people who believed in what he was trying to achieve and were prepared to muck in and help make it happen.

From my point of view, it was particularly rewarding because I had first met George when he was acting on Death on the Nile. We then helped him with Cracked, and now here he was directing his own feature film.

The film went on to premiere at the BFI London Film Festival, competing in the First Feature Competition, which was a fantastic achievement for George and everyone involved.

There is something very satisfying about watching somebody progress through the industry like that. We only played a small part in the journey, but having been there for one of his early shorts and then again for his first feature made Black Dog a particularly nice project to be involved with.
