All Is True was another film with Kenneth Branagh, this time alongside Judi Dench and Ian McKellen.

It was a very small production by comparison with most of the films around it, shot largely at Dorney Court, and from a Special Effects point of view there really wasn’t a huge amount for us to do. It was much more about quietly supporting the production and helping create the period environment where needed.

What made the film memorable for me was simply the people we were working around.

To be on set with Ken, Judi Dench and Ian McKellen — three people who sit right at the top of British classical acting — was quite something. There was no huge spectacle to hide behind, just very experienced actors working closely together on a small, intimate film.

After years of enormous sets, mechanical rigs, explosions and large crews, there was something rather nice about being on a production where everything was stripped back and the focus was almost entirely on performance, dialogue and character.

So All Is True isn’t a film I remember for a particular Special Effects sequence. I remember it for the privilege of being in and around three extraordinary actors, watching them work at close quarters.

Sometimes that is more than enough.
